Farmsteads across this country have been planted with multi-row windbreaks since the Dust Bowl era, and the design logic still holds: an evergreen row on the windward side to stop the wind at ground level, taller deciduous rows behind it, and shrubs on the outer edge to catch drifting snow and soil. A well-placed belt cuts wind speed in its lee for a distance of roughly ten to twenty times its height, which shows up in your heating bill, your irrigation demand and whether the patio is worth sitting on. For the evergreen row, Rocky Mountain juniper and eastern redcedar are the reliable natives that ask for nothing once established. Austrian pine and Afghan pine both perform here and give height faster, with the caveat that Austrian pine is prone to tip blight in wet springs and should be spaced for airflow rather than crammed. For the deciduous rows and for yard trees, bur oak and chinkapin oak are slow and outstanding on alkaline soil, honeylocust and hackberry are tough and quick, western soapberry and desert willow are natives that handle drought and our pH without complaint, and lilac, Nanking cherry and sand plum make a good outer shrub row. What we steer people away from is Siberian elm and cottonwood. Both grow fast, which is exactly why they were planted everywhere, and both spend the next forty years dropping limbs, seeding into every bed on the property and lifting concrete. Installation technique matters as much as species. We dig the hole two to three times the width of the root ball and no deeper than the ball, because a hole dug deep and backfilled loose lets the tree settle and buries the root flare — planting too deep is the leading cause of slow tree death and it happens constantly, including on professional jobs. We set the flare at or slightly above finished grade, score circling roots on container stock, and backfill with the native soil that came out rather than a pit of imported compost, which in clay becomes a bathtub the roots never leave. Three inches of mulch goes in a wide ring pulled back off the trunk. Staking is where our advice differs from most of Texas: here you usually do need it. A newly planted tree in a 40 mph spring wind rocks in the hole, shears its new roots and never establishes properly, so we stake most new plantings, low and flexibly enough that the trunk can still move, and — this is the part everyone forgets — we come back and remove the straps. Watering instructions come written down, because a new tree wants deep infrequent soaking on a completely different schedule from your new lawn.
