Compost goes in at a rate that actually changes soil structure — several cubic yards per thousand square feet tilled into the top four inches — not the decorative dusting that makes a yard look freshly done and changes nothing. Expanded shale is genuinely useful in our tight Pullman clay loam because it holds structure and pore space instead of compressing back down the way sand alone can. Gypsum goes in where sodium is the problem rather than pH, which is a different test and a different bag, and plenty of people buy the wrong one on the strength of a video. Method matters as much as material. We till amendments into the top four inches rather than spreading them on the surface, because two inches of beautiful compost sitting on unbroken clay creates a textural interface that roots refuse to cross and water perches on. That is how you end up with a lawn whose roots are all in the top inch and that wilts the day you miss a watering.
